Yeah Right…

One of the hardest things about being a leader in the 21st century is the skepticism you face. We live in an age of information; what’s really right or wrong? What’s really fact and what’s fiction? What actually produces results? Just know when you roll out a new initiative or relay your vision; everyone is not going to raise their hand to be the first to adopt it. In fact you may be the only one in your organization that believes it can be done. However, that does not mean you drop it or you need to question your intent. It does not mean you change your vision or rework your mission. It just means you will have to lead by example.

I wish I could tell you everyone will love every idea you present. Unfortunately, you will have to show the skeptics it can be done. Also, know the skeptics are not necessarily bad people or teammates. It is not easy convincing people something can be done that has never been done before. Remember as a leader you are always “in front”. You will know where you are going, but your teammates cannot always see where you going. If you are leading into the unknown, you are going to encounter skeptics; internal and external. Think about it, the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. How can the culture change when the culture has always been a certain way? How can you lead the organization to new heights when it’s never been there before?

In reality, leaders need skeptics. Hopefully, they will fuel your fire. Learn to embrace the challenges, hills, valleys, and uncomfortable spaces. Do not let the “yeah rights” distract you from your organizational goals. It is human nature to doubt, especially when you are charting uncharted territory. When you start hearing the “yeah rights”, do not get alarmed or change your game plan. Also, do not become consumed with proving them wrong. Stick to your gut, grit, and vision. Remain competent, confident, and most of all lead LOUD!

Happy New Year!!
